Victims?

Alexis's post about Moby made me think of this notion that there are maybe a thousand people that are somewhat famous for one thing or another, but only a few dozon that show up in gossip magazines or have paparazzi camped outside their house. Maybe its their age or glamour or relavance, or maybe its that the press had respect for those with talent. But even among those who are young, beautiul, and currently working so many are not hounded by paparrazi, why not Keri Russel, or Hillary Swank, or Christian Bale, these celebrities are maybe photographed at premires or big Hollywood events, but not in their daily lives.

I really think their is a large amount of voluntary exposure involved in becoming a tabloid regular. We tend to have this sympathy for celebrities who are constantly in the public eye that they are victims of the magazines and photographers, but to get in that position they must be provoking it in some way. To go out to the celebrity hotspots, appear at the big parties in the newest fashions, get themselves into trouble with a DUI or nipple-slip, they are makking a decison to attract that kind of attention. Sure some attention outstays its welcome, a la Britney, but its hard to get your way out of a contract with the devil. So I feel a little apprehensive about extending my sympathies to celebrities for their public positons.

The funny thing is, the people like Britney and Lindsay who complain about not getting any privacy and being hounded by the paparazzi are the ones who call photographers to let them know where they're going/where they'll be so they can be sure to be photographed. Granted, I'm sure that someone like Britney would have this problem regardless but it certainly doesn't have to be this out of control. I think it all has to do with relevancy--look at someone like Lindsay who has become such a liability/joke in the industry that right now, her primary exposure can only come from photo shoots and constantly being photographed. Same thing for Britney because at this point, it doesn't even matter that she just released an amazing album (seriously) because for the past three years, her relevancy and significance have relied on her tabloid persona so she feeds off of having constant paparazzi around her as much as they do to her.
